The Wild Tchoupitoulas are a legendary New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian tribe founded in the early 1970s by Big Chief George “Jolly” Landry. Rooted in the city’s rich Black masking Indian tradition, their music blends rhythmic chants, call and response vocals, and the spirit of New Orleans street culture. In 1976, they recorded their acclaimed self-titled album with the help of local funk pioneers The Meters, the Neville Brothers, and producer Allen Toussaint, bringing the sounds of Mardi Gras Indian traditions to a wider audience. Their music remains a vital expression of New Orleans’ cultural heritage, connecting generations through rhythm, community, and the enduring power of tradition.
